Pop Up Church Abergavenny is designed to 'do what it says on the tin'. We do not have a building, but bring church into the heart of the community.
Faith ~ Hope ~ Love
in action
WHO ARE WE?
The church's founder members are Steve and Elaine Taylor who live in Abergavenny. Steve has been a Christian for as long as he can remember and was a minister for over 25 years. He has retained his "Reverend" title but rarely uses it. Elaine has been a Christian since 1994. Both have been through their share of life's troubles and have lots of life experience.
OUR VISION
Pop Up Church is very different from the modern concept of "church". The bible tells us that the church is actually the people, not a building. The first ever 'church' was founded by Jesus' disciples whom he told to go out into the world to let people know God's love. To do this they went into different communities, cities and even countries. They got to know people by talking about God in the community and that is the pattern we use. Pop Up Church is portable, so we can meet people at their point of need. And because we don't have a building, we don't need to ask for money. Both Steve and Elaine work full time to support the church.
Wherever we are, we do not preach at you. A relationship with God is between you and Him. We do not have the structure or rules of most churches. For example everyone is welcome to take communion with us. All we are here to do is give you the opportunity to meet Him and to support your through your journey with Him.
CAR BOOT SALES
Pop Up Church Abergavenny officially opened on 10 May 2015 at Pen-Y-Fal Car Boot Sale just outside Abergavenny. In addition to the usual 'church stuff', we seek to serve the bootie community. The boot sale is on a working farm so, as our sign says "Trod in poo? We'll clean your shoe!" We give out 'tip tops' when it's hot and birthday cake at Pentecost. We offer care and support to those in need or those who just want to chat. We have a small seating area where weary shoppers can have a rest. We also cater for our four legged friends with fresh water, some healthy nibbles and water spray to keep them cool.
TOWN CENTRE
On Good Friday we are in the town centre sharing the story of the crucifixion. Anyone is welcome to join us to share a very poignant communion. Sometimes there may even be some hot cross buns for sharing.
In the run up to Christmas we take our Nativity Frieze out. This is a picture of the nativity with faces cut out. Children (and adults) can put their faces through the whole and be part of the Nativity. We encourage people to take their own pictures and maybe use them for Christmas cards. There is no charge for this. We have approval from the county council to do all our street activities.
WINTER WARMER BREAKFAST CLUB
On the last Sunday of January, February and March we meet to share breakfast with ANYONE who wants to join us at The Coliseum (Wetherspoons) in Abergavenny. We operate a 'pay what you can' policy in that breakfast is free but we will accept donations from those who can afford it.
WHAT'S THE POINT?
The reason we do this is to give people who do not know anything about God, Jesus or the Bible the opportunity to learn more, without going into an unfamiliar church building. The Bible asks the question "How will they know if no one tells them?" (Romans 10:14) and that is our aim - to give everyone the choice to accept Jesus or reject him in an environment that is not designed to 'trap' anyone or make them feel uncomfortable.
